Hey y'all! This here is Michael Walsh. He is one stellar at-large. Get to know Michael in the post below and if you see him 'round campus, be sure to congratulate him on getting At-Large of the Week!!
Hometown: Plano, TX (outside of Dallas)
Committee: Academic Enrichment / AE / bAE
Year/Major: Freshman(2020) / Business (haven't declared yet but I'm looking at the 5-year accounting MPA program!)
Something you're working on in Senate:
I just finished my work on SB 1605- it creates a year-in-review address for Senate to give that basically explains legislation and other cool stuff that's happened throughout the year! That's kept me busy for the past several weeks, so now that it's passed I don't have any CURRENT projects I'm working on, but I'm always looking for new ideas!
Something you like to do besides Senate:
I really enjoy going to coffee shops in my free time! It's really cool and Austin is a great city to be in for that! I really don't have a lot of time on my hands with Senate and schoolwork but I try to make the time! I think that since the semester has started I've only had one opportunity to just relax and read a book, so hopefully I have a better schedule later on!
Go-to dance move?:
My go-to dance move is something I invented that I like to call "dad at a barbecue". First, you draw an imaginary square in the space in front of you, and then all you have to do is move your hands within that space (simultaneous shoulder-shimmy is encouraged, yet not mandated)! It's fun and really makes everyone notice you as someone who can be described as "unique" or "what an interesting character." It definitely helps you stand out in front of the crowd, in more than one way!
A passion/hobby of yours:
Apart from my current hobby/summer project of transcribing Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" into hieroglyphics, I really enjoy terrible puns. I also can juggle, like pretty good. I'm almost at the point where I can entertain at a kid's birthday party should that duty present itself. (Fun fact: I literally put that line about the juggling in my At-Large application as my unique qualification, and they still gave me the interview. I still wonder if either the higher ups didn't read my application all the way through, or if they were just stunned and awed by my alleged prowess at a menial and ultimately useless skill.)
I really enjoy the Brooklyn 99 gif because I find myself relating to it in so many scenarios. Please enjoy.
Words from the Co-Chairs:
"Since he joined Senate, Michael has always gone out of his way to connect with other members, both in our committee and outside. He is always tries to go the extra mile, whether it's completing his basic committee tasks or helping with Senate Week planning. He is extremely self-motivated, has a fantastic attitude, and is the epitome of what an at-large should be. Ultimately, he is working to make our committee better and to improve the university as a whole. We're proud of what he has accomplished so far and excited for what he will achieve in the future." -Jacqueline & Erika
